World Kindness Day

>> Friday, November 13, 2009

Hey Rotaractors,

How's your school life? Has it been hectic or slack as usual? Have you started rushing for your projects or waiting until the very last moment to push yourself?

Do you know that today (13 November 2009) is a very special day? Did you see people giving yellow daisy to each other or that your friend suddenly "ambush" you by giving you a big hug and say "Thank You"? Did you hear the news this morning about some volunteers giving daisy at MRT stations?

Yup! Today is World Kindness Day. The purpose of today is to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realise we are citizens of the world. While we may think of people from other cultures as being ‘different’ when we compare them with our own customs and beliefs, it doesn’t mean that we are any better than they are. When we become friends with someone from a different culture we discover that despite some obvious differences, there are many similarities.

Well, why not take this chance to say "Thank You" to someone who has made a difference in your life or maybe just your friends or family members whom you feel gratitude towards to? Send them an e-card @ http://www.123greetings.com/aff-bin/card/1/103714 or simply message them to say "Thank You".

Let's make today an enjoyable and meaningful day~! Spread the love and kindness around you and not only does you make other people's day, you'll certainly brighten up your day too!

"People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive." - Joseph Campbell

May you enjoy this very special day.

Adapted from Channel News Asia Website (http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/332890/1/.html):

Server Ng Swee Kuen prepares the dining room. She uses her sense of touch to tell the cutlery apart because she has been totally blind for the past 16 years.

Server Soh Sang Hee prepares soup

Do sign up and experience it yourself whereby you are unable to rely on your sight and has to exploit your other senses such as taste, touch and smell during this session.

Rotaract Annual Membership Fee

>> Thursday, October 22, 2009

Dear Rotaractors,

We have heard your feedback about the $5 annual Membership Fee, and we have decided to revise the system a little. The annual membership fee is used for organizing club events which the school might not be able to fund us as well as for club adminstration. It is also under the Rotaract By-Law that members are required to pay an annual fee. Moreover, this Membership fee is different from the induction fee. Induction means that you are an official INTERNATIONAL Rotaractor and the certificate is valid until you are 35 years old. Paying the annual fee only meant that you are an official Ngee Ann Polytechnic Rotaractor for that year only.

Please take note of the following changes.

Annual Membership Fee
1st Semester (April - September) : $5.00
2nd Semester (October - March) : $2.50

Members who have enrolled in the first semester (April - September) are required to pay the $5 within one month of their enrollment. However, members who have enrolled in the second semester (October - March) are required to pay $2.50 within one month of their enrollment. Once the year is over (end of March), you have to pay the $5 membership fee in April if you want to continue as a member.

Members who have yet to pay the $5 membership fee but have signed up with us last semester (April 2009) are required to make the $5 payment by the end of November 2009. If not, you will automatically stop receiving emails by December 2009. This payment can be made anytime during our events and please keep the receipt for your reference.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Best Regards,
Wendy Guo
Vice President 09/10
Rotaract Club of Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Take Part in the STOPMotion! Competition!‏‏

Hi everyone,

The STOP Festival Committee has invited all fellow youths from the Rotaract Club to participate in the STOPMotion! competition. This is an inter-school competition run in conjunction with the S.T.O,P! (Stop the ‘Ouch’, Please!) campaign and conference happening in Ngee Ann Polytechnic this upcoming November.

The “STOP” in “STOPMotion!” stands for “Stop the Ouch, Please!”, and when coupled with “Motion” (a synonym for a movement), it essentially is a call to all to make a public stand against violence and abuse in relationships. It provides a platform where you can let your creative juices flow and come out with a message to speak out against the violence in relationships, such as elder abuse, child abuse, marital/ date violence.

This is a good opportunity for students who are passionate about writing, the arts or causing a social movement. Also, it would be a good addition to their portfolio. Not only will certificates, CCA points and attractive prizes be given out, this can also be reflected as a community involvement project.

A waiver of registration fees is possible for students who are eager to participate yet unable to raise enough funds. Registrations for both the competition and conference are now opened.

To register and find out more information about this event, you may visit http://www.stopcampaign.wordpress.com or http://stopmotion09.wordpress.com/.

Rotaract Amazing Race

>> Saturday, September 05, 2009

Hey Rotaractors,

Thank you for those who had participated in our first ever Rotaract Amazing Race on the 31st August 2009. As all of you know, Rotaract members can sign up for this race as pairs or as a person and the organizing committee will group everyone into groups of 4 to 6.

A total of 5 teams took part in this race and the race started from Ngee Ann Polytechnic LT51A. Everyone raced from the school and around town and there were a total of 10 stations. Wow~! Imagine completing the race in about 4~5 hours. Good job, everyone!!!

Although the weather nearly make a joke out of us, at least it didn't rain until the very end! Hope of you who had participated in this race has enjoyed yourself thoroughly and should you have any recommendations on how to improve this race, feel free to email to the club mail at cca_rotaract@np.edu.sg.

Let's take a look at some of the pictures that were taken. =)

Preparation Work
The organizing committee actually stayed over in school two days before the race to prepare all the materials that were needed for the race!!!

Preparing the materials

Picking the beans

Testing one of the station games

What are they so scared about?

The Station Masters
Woah~ Why do the station masters look so shag? It looks more like they were the ones running the race and were exhausted from the run.

Prize Presentation:
At least every group managed to get a prize after the race. =)

Consolidation Prizes

1st Runner-up (Group 8)

1st Place (Group 6)

Group Shot

Fellowship sub-committee (Rotaract Amazing Race Organizing Committee)
Let's give a round of applause to the organizing committee for planning this Amazing Race!!!

Fund-raising Event

>> Sunday, April 19, 2009

Hi everyone,

Rotaract Club of Ngee Ann Polytechnic is currently selling a book titled "Unriven" by Rahul Keerthi for $5.

Unriven is an intimate collection of poems culled from Rahul's depository of four years. His works are notes gathered from daily life, many inspired by friends who have shared their experiences with him. Rahul paints a vivid description of the trials and tribulations of teenage life. He explores the joy and pain of falling in and out of love, and how our social experiences shape us to become the people that we are today.

Can take a look at http://www.nkfs.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=193&Itemid=98 to know more about the author!

This is really an interesting read and it's definitely worth the 5 bucks! A touching and revoluntionary read!!!

Below are some pictures of the book.

All proceeds will be given to the Rotaract Club fund. If you wish to purchase this book, you can contact Sharon at 98194614 and Vivien at 90486438. Thanks!
